 About folktales:

Bettleheim, Bruno,  The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales. Knopf, 1977. This is the classic on using unaltered fairy tales with children.

MacDonald, Margaret Read,  The Storyteller's Sourcebook. Gale, 1982.

Ireland, Index to Fairytales. (several volumes covering different years through 2001.)

Use these to find a folktale about almost any subject. MacDonald also contains geographical and ethnic indexes.

Some magazines for children:

Cobblestone.  History for ages 10 up. Often contains retellable stories.  Each issue concentrates on one subject.

Cricket.  Good literature for 7‑11 year olds. Usually contains retellable stories.  Also see Spider and Ladybug for younger children, other stories.  Good places to find holiday stories.

Stone Soup.  Publishes writing and art by children up to 12.  Your students can submit their writing to this.

 Look for your own area storytelling group.  Your public library should have information about it.
